Fire pottery in a pizza oven
A pizza oven can be used for other things then making pizza. Today we are taking a look at fire pottery in a pizza oven. Different types of ceramics for example: pottery or porcelain are fired at different temperatures.
The temperatures at which the products are baked differ from manufacturer to manufacturer and from product to product. So we are going to look at the temperature pottery needs to bake.
Pizza oven entry size
But first one other thing to consider, a pizza oven often has a relatively wide opening. But usually do not have a very heigh opening.
So this would limit the size of your pottery that could fit in the pizza oven, but read on you might be surprised if you can fire pottery in a pizza oven.
Pre-firing of the pottery in a pizza oven
With regard to pre-firing, this is done for pottery at a temperature of approximately 1652-2120 degrees Fahrenheit or 900-1150 degrees Celsius.
With porcelain, the biscuit firing takes place at about 2372 degrees Fahrenheit or 1300 degrees Celsius or even higher. Because pizza ovens do not reach these temperatures it is not recommended to pre fire pottery in your pizza oven.
Second firing of the pottery in a pizza oven
The second firing or the so-called glaze firing. In most cases the glaze firing takes place at an even higher temperature than the biscuit firing.
With porcelain this happens from 2012 degrees Fahrenheit or 1100 degrees Celsius, but this can go up to even 2552 degrees Fahrenheit or 1400 degrees Celsius.
With pottery, the glaze firing takes place at about 1652-1742 degrees or 900-950 degrees Celsius. Again because second firing needs to be done at higher temperatures then a pizza oven can reach it is not recommended to do this.
The answer to can you fire pottery in a pizza oven
No it is not recommended, because a pizza oven has a maximum temperature of about 950 degrees Fahrenheit or 510 degrees celsius this is not enough to fire pottery. It is better to look for a dedicated oven for firing your pottery.
In the meantime when you have your pottery in the oven, make a pizza and enjoy it making it in a pizza oven.
